UK office employees showing alarming signs of inactivity

UK office employees spend about 55% of their working day sitting down, with nearly 60% confessing to not having a lunch break and instead consuming food their desk, a survey revealed.

A study of 1,000 office workers deduced that workers spent a staggering five years of their lives sitting at a desk without getting up, amounting to virtually five hours a day and 24 consecutive hours a week.

The Sanlam Private Investments research corresponds with the release of an office fitness guide in tandem with Saracens rugby club to enable office workers to engage in physical activity in the workplace.

It comprises a mix of 15 minute and 30 minute exercise patterns which can be completed in the office as well as weekend exercises.

The survey results hinted that less than half of office employees were making up for their sedentary lifestyle while away from the office, with 47% undertaking below an hour of weekly exercise.

Nearly a quarter (24%) of workers revealed that they could not cram in any exercise into their working day and added that it was too late to engage in exercise when they reached home.

Therefore, due to their lack of exercise, more than half of workers (52%) added they held concerns about their weight while 31% were at their ideal weight for their height.

A further 30% said they had disturbing stress levels and another 53% said they had worries for their health.
